Repeat purchase growth: when to focus on existing customers

SNS Team · Reviewed 2026-11-05

A coffee customer and a bag customer have different repurchase cycles. The same weekly discount message will not suit both.

Look at customers who returned: how long did it take, did they buy the same product, and what discouraged those who did not return? Build a reason to come back around actual use and experience, rather than discounts alone. What reason can you offer besides a lower price?

Start with the product's usage cycle

A coffee customer may reorder after finishing a pack, while a bag buyer has a different need cycle. Ask returning customers why they came back. Distinguish them from people who stopped because of a poor experience or unsuitable product. Do not infer timing from a competitor's activity alone.

A practical step to try

Group customers by first purchase, product and channel. Track return rate, order value and follow-up costs. Use reminders, usage content or after-sales support with customer permission and an easy way to stop messages.

Where do retention campaigns fit?

Retargeting can help when the necessary data and permissions are available. Compare repeat-sale costs with contribution margin. Report new-customer acquisition separately so one campaign is not credited with every sale from existing customers.
